Yoga was originally designed as a path to spiritual enlightenment and to attain permanent peace. In modern times it is practiced for it’s numerous health benefits. Hindu monks brought yoga over to the West in the second half of the 20thcentury and since then it has only continued to grow in popularity. It remains ever popular in both South and North India.
In it’s most basic form yoga is a series of structured poses, known as asanas, used with breath awareness. There are many types of yoga; the most popular include Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Bikram and Iyengar.
When practicing yoga, we are practicing mind-body connection, thus bringing us more in tune with our emotions, feelings and vulnerabilities. Yoga is also self-empowering, grounding and teaches us to be accepting of our true self.
Other benefits include reducing stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression that everyone can experience at some stage in our lives. Physical benefits of Yoga include an increase in strength, stamina, flexibility and improving posture.

“I always loved the definition of Vinyasa, as it describes the type of Yoga I teach well. In Sanskrit, Nyasa denotes “to place” and vi denotes “in a special way.” Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic and flowing style of practice that is linked or connected by timing of breath or “pranayama”. It is easy for beginners to flow through their practice with their timing of breath rather than the teachers pace of instruction. And for the more advanced Yogis or students, Vinyasa becomes more of a moving meditation and allows you to delve deep into their practice.” Amy Coghlan
