HInduism is one of the most dominant religions in India. In Hinduism there are millions of gods, but they are all manifestations of the One Supreme Being. Some of the gods are more popular and well known than others and have their own followings and temples throughout the country. Regardless of where you travel in India you are bound to find a temple, even driving on narrow windy roads in the foothills of the Himalayas you will come across some type of shrine. In South India you’ll find the temples are more vibrant and colourful than that of the North but still as numerous.
Lakshmi is the goddess of abundance in wealth, prosperity and fortune. She is also considered to be the embodiment of beauty and brings good luck to all of her devotees.
Durga (meaning the ‘invincible’) is the goddess of courage and strength. She stands for the victory of good over evil and is the most popular incarnation of Devi. She represents determination, action and protection.
Shiva (meaning ‘the auspicious one’) is regarded as one of the primary forms of God, and is known as the destroyer (of the ego). He has many forms, both fearsome and benevolent. At the highest level, Shiva is limitless, transcendent, unchanging and formless.
