The beautiful heritage town of Hampi will take your breath away! The natural geographical formations are what truly sets Hampi aside as a standout location. The town is strewn with massive boulders and ancient ruins and is fertile with banana plantations and coconut palms. It sounds too good to be true.
Hampi is found within the ruins of the old Vijayanagara Empire in the southwest state of Karnataka. The Vijayanagara Empire existed from 1336 until 1646. It was named after it’s capital city Vijayanagara, the ruins in which Hampi was built. Some excavations at the site have revealed the immense power and wealth that the empire had, which also includes many monuments spread over South India (none quite as exquisite as Hampi though). In fact there is a ‘Group of Monuments at Hampi’ that are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Hampi is also an important religious centre for South India with pilgrims visiting from far and wide. It is home to the Virupaksha Temple which is included in UNESCO’s ‘Group of Monuments at Hampi’. Virupaksha is another form of Shiva, the destroyer. The temple’s history is believed to have been uninterrupted from about the 7th century, making it one of the oldest functioning temples in India. Make sure you have a rupee handy because the gorgeous temple elephant Lakshmi might feel like giving you a smooch or a blessing, but only if you’re lucky! The temple and township sit on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. It’s a lovely river, where you will see people bathing or doing their washing, a few boats, some ruins and of course boulders! If you’re game enough you can pay a guide to take you out on the river in a coracle boat (made of woven willow rods). You’ll go over rapids, under rocks but don’t worry, there will also be some smooth sailing thrown in there too!Hampi attracts native and foreign travellers alike, it’s rich history and beautiful surroundings make it a must see destination of the world. Our wonderful tour: Mystical Journey of South India will take you to Hampi and let you experience all of this natural beauty for yourself.
