Considering that India is the spiritual capital of the world it’s no surprise that it is overlaid with beautiful ashrams! Traditionally ashrams were located away from hives of human activity, to allow for peaceful meditation and spiritual instruction. In modern times it’s not surprising to find one in or near a city.
One of the most wonderful ashrams can be found in Tamil Nadu at the base of the holy mountain Arunachala, just out of Tiruvannamalai, see our previous blog ‘Tempting Tamil Nadu’ for more information on this state. It is the ashram of Sri Ramana Maharshi, a guru who spent nearly 50 years in contemplation. Sri Ramana achieved Samadhi; conscious exit of the body at this location and his devotees can sit and meditate at the exact same shrine.
Hindu priests chanting the Vedas…the energy is amazing!
Sri Ramana followed the path of self-enquiry, writing many books and quotes on this expansive topic. Here is one – ‘Happiness is your nature. It is not wrong to desire it. What is wrong is seeking it outside when it is inside.’The tranquil ashram is surrounded by lush greenery; peace pervades everything in the vicinity. Day visitors can sit and meditate while experiencing the magic of Hindu priests chanting the Vedas. Devotees are also allowed to stay at the ashram by applying in writing, usually with at least three months notice. There is a great bookshop on the grounds and various other programs available. Needless to say it’s a hot spot for devotees and worshippers worldwide!!
We have numerous tours that visit this amazing ashram; ‘Vinyasa Yoga & Wellbeing’, ‘Living the Ayurvedic Way South’, ‘Body Mind Spirit Healing Tour’ and ‘Heart of South India’.
