Mysore, the amazing city of palaces
A favourite destination of Indian people and foreigners alike! Located in beautiful Karnataka, Mysore is boasted as the cultural capital of the state.For almost six centuries the Wadiyar family ruled the Kingdom of Mysore. This dynastic rule was brought to an end in 1947 with the independence of India from British rule. The family reigned from Mysore Palace and fort. (here I must interject that Mysore has many historic palaces but when using the wording ‘Mysore Palace’ everyone is referring to the one with the fort). The Wadiyar family made significant contributions to the cultural growth of the city.
Mysore Palace is truly a sight to see.
Consisting of three levels of stone structure, pink marble domes, arches and even a five-storied tower-it is a feast for the eyes! The surrounding gardens add to the beauty of the place. It is the most famous attraction in Mysore and to make it even more interesting the Wadiyar family still resides there! Make sure you also see the palace at night when it is lit up to impress, by more than 96,000 light bulbs!Chamundi Hill is one of the top eight most sacred hills in South India. There is a wonderful Hindu temple at the top named Chamundeshwari, after the fierce Goddess Durga. On your way up the hill you’ll see India’s third largest Nandi statue that is about 16 feet high and 25 feet wide!. Nandi is of course the vehicle of Lord Shiva. Another great reason to travel to the top is the gorgeous view of the city, lakes and palaces!
And not to be missed is the incredibly lively and chaotic fruit and flower market. The senses move into overdrive with the sights, smells, sounds and tastes in this market. It’s a photographer’s paradise and a wonderful ‘true local’ experience with friendly stall holders and colourful local produce!
