Goa, A West Coast Beach Paradise

As well as being a tropical paradise, Goa is also rich in culture!

As well as being a tropical paradise, Goa is also rich in culture! Goa was finally annexed to India 1961, after 450 years of Portuguese rule. It is this unique mixture of Indian and Portuguese culture that attracts millions of travellers to Goa every year. Not only culturally diverse Goa is also visibly different from the rest of India. The Portuguese architecture is a trademark of Goa, and it is renowned for it’s places of worship and world heritage sites. The old mansions constructed in the Indo-Portuguese style still stand though many are dilapidated, they are kept as relics of the past. The history of this beautiful state dates back 20,000-30,000 years, recording some of the earliest signs of human life in India!

The religious harmony in this state is something that must be noted. In Goa there is a majority of Hindus, followed by Christians and then Muslims. Despite the diversity in belief systems there has been virtually no conflict relating to the issue. Goa has a ‘live and let live’ system, which creates a peaceful environment full of relaxed individuals.

Aside from enjoying the beautiful beaches, some of the “must do’s” in Goa include: visiting the Bom Jesus Basilica, a UNESCO world heritage site, the convents and churches of Old Goa as well as a guided tour of one of the many spice plantations.

Goan cuisine is a mouth-watering mix between Portuguese and Indian cooking. One of the specialities is an exquisite rich fish curry with a hint of coconut……yummmm. It’s no surprise the food is so delicious considering Goa is one of the spice capitals of India, to read more about the wonderful health benefits of spice and all things nice visit our previous blog ‘Aromatic India’.
