If you have the fortune to travel around India you will see a number of magnificent forts throughout the country. Some of these forts date back almost a 1000 years; it’s all part of the rich cultural history that makes up India.
Though there are many amazing forts in India, there are four that are most noteworthy.
Firstly, the Daulatabad Fort in West India’s Maharashtra, is definitely worth a mention. This fort was built in the 14th Century and is one of the worlds best preserved. It was built on a conical hill about 200m high with the only access via a narrow bridge making it one of the most impregnable forts in India.
The Golkonda Fort in Hyderabad, South India, is also worth a look. Built on a granite hill 120m high, it is thought that the beginnings of this fort date back to 1100’s. Golkonda gained fame for housing many diamonds, such as the Koh-I-Noor Diamond (actually found in the surrounding area) and the Hope Diamond. The system of acoustics within the fort is quite amazing; they have been intricately designed so that you can stand on a hill, clap your hands and be heard kilometres away.
The Gwalior Fort is an 8th century hill fort in Madhya Pradesh, Central India. This ancient fort was originally built for a princess but has now been turned into an archaeological museum and sees hundreds of visitors every day. It is rather breathtaking; within the fort’s walls there are six palaces and three temples. Gwalior is built 100m above the city and is a beautiful skyline view from down below.
Lastly, and by all means not the least, is the Red Fort of Agra. This fort is part of the 16th Century Mughal Empire and is a UNESCO world heritage site. Once you enter the grounds of the fort prepare yourself for some of the most beautiful architecture; there are buildings made from pure marble covered in intricate carvings, palaces, temples and a gorgeous view of the Taj Mahal. In fact, the creator of the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan, was imprisoned in the Red Fort by his own son for years!
