Indian architecture is so varied in design and structure that it’s hard to define. The unique collection of architectural styles can be linked to the rise and fall of empires and dynasties alike. As well as, of course, the natural evolution of time!
From the Indus Valley Civilization to the Mughal era and all the way up to the establishment of the Republic of India in 1947, there has always been a different determining influence within India.
We all have heard of course of the Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of the world, and built purely to immortalise love! This monument draws thousands upon thousands of visitors yearly! Built in the Mughal era, this mausoleum took 22 years to complete! If you want to learn more, check out one of our previous blog ‘The Majestic Taj Mahal’.
Another popular tourist destination is the Khajuraho Group of Monuments in Madhya Pradesh. Built between 950-1150 AD, during the ‘middle ages’, this collection of monuments is considered one of the seven wonders of India, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What makes these Hindu and Jain temples unique are the erotic sculptures covering the walls, perhaps inspired by the tantric tradition. The temples were built during the Chandel dynasty.
Harmandir Sahib, more commonly known as the Golden Temple, is also one of the seven wonders of India. And consequently, another beautiful piece of architecture! Built during the 16th century this is the holiest temple for the followers of the Sikh religion. Picture a golden temple, in the middle of a lake, surrounded by four white marble walls and you have this beautiful structure. To read more see our previous blog ‘The Gorgeous Golden Temple’.
The lesser known but equally beautiful Hawa Mahal is another structure worthy of note. Lal Chand Ustad designed this building in the form of Krishna’s crown. There are 953 small windows on the face of this five-story building, which draws the comparison between it and honeycomb. The windows were originally intended for the royal ladies to observe everyday life, but they also function as a natural air cooler for the building. The building is made of red and pink sandstone and most breathtaking at sunrise.
These are just a few examples of the multitudinous amounts of unique architecture within the borders of India.
