In Himachal Pradesh, North India, you’ll find Rewalsar, a tiny town with a huge spiritual heart. This small town is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs alike. The town is built around a lake and overlooked by a huge statue of Padmasambhava.
Padmasambhava, known also Guru Rinpoche, is recognized as a second Buddha. It is said that he was burnt alive, and after a week of the pyre burning a lake appeared and Padmasambhava manifested himself in a lotus in the middle of the lake. Padmasambhava brought Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century and is much adored.
The caves of Padmasambhava are not to be missed. They are on top of a hill up above the town. Visitors can sit with the monks while they chant or meditate, a truly warming and enlightening experience. Or there is a little room where you can light an oil lamp and make a wish/say a prayer. Around the outside of the caves there are thousands of prayer flags. They are strung everywhere, between rocks, trees and the ground. It’s wonderful to walk amongst them as they float about in the wind or to sit and meditate in such a ‘power’ place. You can also sit with the monks, morning and afternoon, in their temple while they chant.
Throughout the town you’ll find plenty of monks roaming around, stalls selling momos and other tasty delights, temples and lots of cheeky monkeys. Oh, and someone may even point you in the direction of a delicious latte. You’ll also find plenty of vendors selling food to feed the fish – pick some up and go for a stroll around the lake. The fish go crazy for it ; it’s surprising how many are actually in the lake. There are lots of dogs lazing around the lake too, and they don’t mind being fed either.
